Dear Miss Pfefferkorn :
It was vory kind of you to send xm a cojy of your report to the Committee on the
Histiry of the School of lurking* It has been read With koen interest and I should like
to make the following comments concerning it*
11 Some of our Graduates ,?—.. their Contribution to. Ifars'in^
I am entirely in accord with the views which you express on pages 3 and 4 of your re*
port and especially with your statement teat "this ?#£«**§ ia a history and not a book of
biographical studios** I realise* however, that the solution of this thorny problem will
not bo easy to find*
l£MLJHak§^^fJ&^a i
In my ju&gnent, the total length of the history should not yce^ed £50 pages of print--.
matter* including appendices and index* The coaplete^shbuiar'not 'be~more unwlal^'^
than the ^he&my history but a careful selection of format and typography might laake it
possible to include mora subject matter within this limitation* The advice of any reL
ble-.publisher would be helpful and should be sought at an early date*
I hearily agree that a comprehensive Indeac is both necessary and desirable*
Overall ffitlo %
Th% suggested title does not seam to me to be at all suitable and I am definitely op~
od to its use* I should like more time to reflect before f feing alternatives*
Introduction and ^o:^r:ivdfeents t
I doubt whether any joint statement oould be prepared which world be equally satisfactory
to both authors and therefor- s that each of us should write her cm. Howevor, a
brief preface, indicating the basis of their collaboration* should be prepared jointly
and signed by both authors*
Pogri/ble. visit to Bait Lores
I-shall probabl. a the vicinity of Baltimore early in October and shall take this
opportunity of i Bay roanuecript with certain original sources. Would it b@ possible
for us to confer at -fc^is time on several important points* particularly the management of
footnotes and the preparation of thejfcxl&dex? An early reply would be appreciated*
Copies of this letter are being sent to the chairmen of the History Com&lttee and the
Editorial Cosmlttec #

Bear Miss Pfefferkora s
fhanfc you v :>h for allowing mo to read that part of your MSS. which deals
specifically with clinical nursing* It is being returned herewith*
I asi availing iqyself of the opportunity you have so kindly given me and should like to
make the following brief eosnient* She first ten pages deal in considerable detail with
situations already described at eomo length in wy own naanuscript* On the other hand*
discussion of the developments that took place during the period 1910 to 1920 is apparently limited to two paragraphs (the l:u,t on pagt 8 and the last on page 10)* Consequently*
very little factual information BeemB to be available about a decade when great expansion
was taking place ia the Hospital services and there must have been corresponding changes
in the clinical nursing field* It is suggested that any reader ifao was not herself a
Hopkins graduate would find it rather difficult to follow tho thread of the historical
I quite realise* however* th-t you nay not a^ree that this point is well taken and, of
course, I have no intention of insisting upon it*
With kind regards,
yours very sincerely
