FORT ROUGE, a temporary structure built some time
between 1733 and 1738 by Verandrye's sons, was the
first structure erected by white men at the junction of
the Red and Assiniboine Rivers where Winnipeg is today.
Sixty-six years later, in 1804, Montreal fur-traders established
Fort Gibraltar on the north bank of the Assiniboine. The rival
fur-company opened a post nearby, and when Lord Selkirk's
colonists, the pioneer settlers in the North-West, reached the Red
River in 1812 there were three antagonistic forces in the district.
The strife lasted until 1821, when the rival companies amalgamated. The first Fort Garry was built in 1822 on the old site
of Fort Gibraltar, and named after Nicholas Garry, who superintended the merging of the two companies' organizations in
the North-West. A second fort, also called Fort Garry, was
erected a little farther west in 1826, and was rebuilt following
its destruction in the great flood of that year. The third and last
Fort Garry, depicted on the front cover, was built on higher
ground in 1835.   In 1851 it was enlarged and extended to the north.
For over thirty years this Fort was the centre of government
and business in the Red River district. Indians, trappers,
settlers, and traders came by canoe, by trail, by Red River cart
and by pony to trade in the store within the walls. The settlement which grew up around Fort Garry kept the British tradition
alive in the trying days of the sixties and seventies, and was the
nucleus of Winnipeg and the great prairie provinces.
The settlement grew, and the importance of the fort dwindled
as easy communication was established with the outside world.
The first steamboat came down the Red River to Fort Garry
in 1858. This was the Anson Northiup, which had been carted
overland from the Mississippi in sections and assembled on the
upper waters of the Red River. In 1869 Fort Garry was the storm-
centre of the Riel Rebellion. For months the settlers were
at the mercy of the rebels who held the fort. Peace again came.
Manitoba entered Confederation in 1870, and Fort Garry was
needed no longer. Today the central archway stands in a little
park in the heart of Winnipeg, a symbol of the dauntless courage
which won the great North-West for the British Empire.
The Confederation of the provinces which Fort Garry made possible was solidified and made permanent by the Canadian Pacific
Railway linking East, Centre and West.
