Your letters of January 8th and 9th re the above.
In view of !!r.Brodie, s letter to me January 9th,
copy attached, last clause, and the turn this matter has taken,
I fail to see why you did not go straight to Mr.Irons. If it
is necessary to take up with Mr.Ussher after you have interviewed
Mr.Irons, I want something definite to work on. Please therefore
take up with Mr.Irons at the earliest possible date so that the
matter may be placed on a proper definite footing.

My letter of November 3rd, file A.98947,
Please note attached from Mr^. Sturdee.
It appears that he wishes the C.A.Line
credited because he assumes that they were debited
with the cost of telegrams.
My understanding is that where Seattle or
Portland send any telegrams to the C.A.Line they are
placed in our account, and the office expense sheet
is endorsed "charge C.k.Line" and that these telegrams are charged through the Audit Department to
the C. A.Line account.
Might I suggest to you that no change should
be made in connection with the handling of the C.A.Line
telegrams until you have spoken to Mr.Usshor, who makes
all arrangements in regard to traffic with the C.A.Line,
I will not go into the question of telegrams with Mr.
Irons until I hear from you or Mr.Ussher.

Telegraph and Cable charges collected by
C. P. Ry. agents in connection with
Canadian-Australasian S.S. Line business.
Yours of the 2nd inst. I note that when
Canadian-Australasian S.S# Line will request an agent to
collect cable charges from a passenger , and which has been
an expense through their office, in such cases you have
advised Mr. Irons that copy of his letter to agent should
be sent me for check on agent?s accounts. Tkls will be
satisfactory.
I note what you say re telegraph charges, and have
passed this Information on to party interested so that Canadian-
Australasian S.S. Line account will not be charged in future.
1 you please, however, have it understood that the Passenger
Department are to advise me promptly of any collections by our
agents from passengers account telegraph charges so that I can
see that same are accounted for promptly and properly. Please

Dear Sirj
Telegraph charges collected ny C.P. Ry. Agents
account Canadian-Australasian s/s Line.
I enclose herewith carbon of Mr. Nason's letter October
5rd to Mr* Irons which was sent me attached to San Francisco
balance sheet 7/10/19 covering an amount #2.50 collected from
Mr. H. P. Phillips to cover telegraph charges account
reservation s/s "Makura", and would refer you to my letter
of November 7th to Mr. Irons together with his reply, attached.
You will of course see at once that my object is to obtain a check
on agents for amounts they collect, which I credit to
Canadian-Australasian s/s Line on receipt of proper evidence.
If I were to follow the suggestion in last clause of Mr. Irons1
letter it would be no check at all, as an agent could collect
charges and not account for same and we would be none the wiser.
I enclose file L-92299 re Debit #2.55 at Seattle
balance sheet 50/9/19. You will notice I wrote him on
November 12th, and he has presumably sent in reply carbon of
enclosed letter to General Manager, Union S/S Co., Dunedin, N.Z. 7
