This man was killed in action. - The dreams of all that might have been are things-of the mist for him—a fearful price that your dreams and mine might come'true. All that he had he gave. , We are not-worthy of it. His was a firm body—a stout heart. His lips once smiled. Those arms caressed a mother. His feet once lightly trbd the home lanes and his ears have heard some dear one whisper that they loved him. . . Let us strip our tongue of gentle language. ' See him now. V ^ '■-.'• A crushed and blasted body—a bleeding heart—a twistecf face—shredded arms and"ribb6ned legs—ears that never mother's voice will hear and lips that,.are forever stilled. Force did this thing. A Prussian force loosed upon a peaceful world—a pestilence spewed upon freemen by a gluttonous German'Gorgon.. It is a tremendous force, devastating, brutal force—force-that tears and rends and obliterates the best "of all our youth. What is our answer to this? Unrelenting- force—dominating force. The force that speaks from out the mouths of our soldiers' cannon, from their machine guns, from their rifles, from their aeroplanes. But also the force that speaks from our hearts, from our very blood and from our pocketbooks. Force which will'bring autocracy to its knees—force which will win the war and bring peace to the world forever more. Look again upon the picture. There is just a single boyish hand clutching fin mortal agony. At what? Life?—he will never know it more. Help?—there is no help for such as he. But there is'"help for those others who now face as horrible a fate as he met. Our dollars will save lives—our dollars will protect our men—our dollars will destroy the Hun and destroy his force which would destroy us—our dollars will win the wai—our dollars will bring a lasting peace. Look long upon this again you. Bond Slackers. Study it in all its details you cringing, whining pacifists. Picture the remnants of your body there you cowards who are ready to echo a German cry of peace. Shut your eyes to it you traitors who will not purchase more bonds than you can atfford. Hide the thoug-c of it away you heartless misers who count your dollars as more precious than a human life. Look upon it—visualize it—then damned be a manhood that does not rise in hot response to the Victory Loan appeal and damned be that conscience that does not make you buy and buy and buy. Shame upon that one who permits peace talk to tighten his purse strings. For Prussia's suit for peace does not ring true. It does not mean the end of all war-—that vital tiling we are fighting for—and in answer to that false plea from Potsdam an aroused world to-day is thundering back a mighty NO. Your dollars must be your answer and that answer must be the answer of all true men and all patriots—an answer that will reach across the sea to the men who stand ready and who are giving their all for you—an answer who can gainsay it—which will reach the ears of our deathless dead? When a ear owner hears a squeak under the hood ol" his machine, or a rattle in the body, lie knows that there is something wrong, and is not content until it has been corrected. "Jt is entirely different with a battery. It is to the nverage motorist nothing more or less than a black box. As he cannot get into it, he is not very much interested in its internal working, and when anything goes wrong with' it, there is no uoise to warn him that all is not right. "On'this account it usually gets little attention. Perhaps the motorist thinks that because it is quiet it is all right, and he is, on that account, apparently pained and shocked when some day it actually refuses to work for him. ■ ' ' "Even though the battery does not make a noise when it is not being well treated, there is one sure means of telling its condition, and that is by systematic visits to your service station at least every two weeks, where the battery man will apply, free of charge, a hydrometer test." —Borrow and Buy Bonds— THE TRACTOR AND THE CONTRACTOR A movement, starting in Montreal and continuing in Chatham, Ontario, might well be carried throughout Canada. This is the contracting idea as applied to farm lands. City men with a little capital are forming syndicates to buy tractors and break idle land' under the direction of practical contractors. This principle could be applied to regular farm lands and would help solve the- labor problem for the Canadian farmer. —Borrow and Buy Bonds— increased fuel consumption, greater strain on car and occupants, including the driver, reduction of tire mileage, but it actually results in the motorist running up an expense account that is absolutely unnecessary." Protect your soldiers with your savings—buy Victory Bonds. AND IN.PAPERS SPEEDY DRIVING PROVES COSTLY Cuts Tire Mileage and Increases Fuel Bills, Says Hockley. The work is being done by day labor, but the city engineer's department may call for tenders for fencing later on. The tract being graded comprises about two acres in what was a section allotted many years ago . to a local fraternal society, but which, according to the average rate of burial, would not be filled for many years yet. The pressing need for additional cemetery accommodation lias been repeatedly pointed out to the city council by Dr. F. T. Underbill, city medical health officer, and further proof of the timely nature of his warnings is now found in the fact that there are practically no unsold entire family plots left in | odd amount the whole cemetery. There are lots of space' yet for individual' graves and many family plots which have only one interment in the whole plot, but these plots, having been sold, are closed as far as public use is concerned. It is expected that as soon as the grading and preparing of this present tract is finished the'city will call for tenders for the clearing and '.grading of a tract of about five acres, known {.as the Jones' addition, lying south of the Wilson road, which will provide additional cemetery accommodation. The deaths in the present "flu'' epidemic has tended to fill up the cemetery much faster than the civic health authorities figured on. District of New Westminster, British NT" Columbia. DECLINES TO ALLOW LID TO BE EVEN TILTED Just how long the present "closed city" regulations are to remain in force depends, of course, on the duration and extent of the Spanish "flu" epidemic, but while that lasts there is no chance of any modification of the regulations prohibiting all public meetings and assemblages. This was announced by Mayor Gale on Saturday, after his worship had a conference with Hon. Dr. J. D. 'McLean, Minister of Healh and Education, by, whose' orders the present regulations were put in force. On behalf of the local committee of the Victory Loan organization, Mayor Gale sought to secure the privilege of some luncheon meetings of the general committee for closer organization purposes. The mayor pointed out that men had to eat some time and it was claimed that there would be no harm in a few members of the committee getting together for luncheon or dinner and talking over organization details in connection with the coming loan. Hon. Dr. McLean, however, was quite adamant against any abrogation of the present regulations. In other words, the minister refused to allow the "lid" to be tilted, even ever so little. He declared that if such per- mission were officially given it would likely prove the opening wedge for similar requests from a lot of other charitable and patriotic organizations which, in the minister's opinion, would lead to defeating the purpose for which the regulations were drafted. Title | British Columbia Record |
Publisher | Vancouver : Record Publishing Company |
Date Issued | 1918-10-28 |
Description | The British Columbia Record was published in Vancouver, and ran from June 1916 to July 1922. The Record was published every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. As the official publication for the Architectural Institute of B.C., the B.C. Builders’ Exchange, and the Building and Construction Industries’ Exchange of B.C., the Record primarily covered news related to building, contracting, engineering, real estate, and industrial finance. The Record was published by the Record Publishing Company, which had previously published the paper under a number of different titles, including the Daily Building Record and the British Columbia Building Record. The Record subsequently evolved into the Journal of Commerce. |
