We did the best to keep his spirit true and fresh and clean. He was" so strong and well. "We gave our days and nights to keep him so. We called in fresh air and sunlight to our, aid! good food and play, all healthful things" of life. He was so bright and clever. We sent him to the very best of schools, denying self that he might know no lack of opportunity, or feel no door of progress closed to him. Eighteen—So young, but would we have him play the coward's part, with selfish, shriveled soul too small to dwell within so fair a frame? Is that our choice? v No, we'would have him honorable—our son. This is slightly less than they paid in the second quarter and about $500,000 less than they paid in the third quarter of 1917. No announcement is made of the dividends of the Hercules, the great lead mine of the Coeur d'Alenes, and without such announcement it can only be estimated that the company still pays the dividends that its May statement to the assessor showed it paid in 1917. The Bunker Hill and Sullivan also has ceased to publish its dividends and this also is estimated as the same as it paid in 1917. Many companies are hard hit by war conditions and taxes and are not paying dividends on that account. Only one mine in Washington is paying this year, compared to a -half dozen last year. Total dividends for the second quarter of 1918 are as follows: Elec tric Point, $23,S12; Hercules, $750,- 000; Bunker Hill & Sullivan, $490,- 500; Caledonia, $234,450; Interstate- Callahan, $232,495; Tamarack'& Custer, $106,575; Federal, $209,757; Granby, $374,962; Canadian Consolidated, $261,953; Howe Sound Copper, $79,207; Herdley ' Gold, $36,000; Mc- Gillivray Creek Coal, $24,143; International Coal, Alberta, $45,000. The grand total of the district for the second quarter was $2,SSS,S'36. These vessels are, part of an order for ten placed by the Belgian government. Three others were given to the Pacific Construction Company for construction at the Port Coquit- lam shipyard, and four to the Western Canada shipyard in Vancouver. SHIPBUILDING NOTES The next boat to be launched by the Lyall Co., North Vancouver, will be the Helen Lyall. As' soon as the sin ft propellor arrives from Winnipeg, this vessel will be put into the water. To render more efficient to members of the Board of Trade, the foreign trade section will issue a monthly list of foreign trade enquiries received. ■ Each enquiry will he numbered, and the names and addresses of the enquirers may he obtained from the secretary of the section, Mr, W. E. Payne. The first month's list has just been issued as follows: (1) Vancouver firm has vessel on berth for Mexico. Office space. (2), Mexican firm wants to buy certain wire cloth and woollen cloths, known as "felps," for paper machinery. (3) Mexican firm wishes to establish commercial relations with Canadian firms to sell them mahogany, oak, ebony, walnut, cedar, orange- wood, manganese, antimony, tungsten, coffee, cocoa, vanilla riceroot, sarsaparilla, hides. (4) Credito Italiano, Milan, Italy, desires to' place export and import firms into direct communication with the best Italian firms interested in Canadian trade. (5) Japanese firm, manufacturing all kinds of porcelain, would like names of parties interested. In reference to the desire of the section to develop the Mexican trade, the acting consul for Mexico in Vancouver has received word from the Gulf Mail Steamship Company of San Francisco, assuring him that the company is willing to make Vancouver a port of call, providing freight offers. The attention of members of the board is drawn to the fact, that journals and literature from all parts of the world are on file in the library of the board dealing with trade questions. THE TRUCK AS A TRACTOR. "An excellent example of how a farmer may operate motor trucks for profit is that of an owner whose farm is fifty miles from Denver," says W. L.. I-Iighson of the Kissel Kar. f "This farmer is a large grain and feed raiser, and when he is not employing his Kissel Trucks in hauling his produce to market, he puts his trucks into the fields as tractors. This man says that a truck is much super ior to the tractor in pulling a drill. The truck makes more speed and packs the ground less and is able to carry the grain with it, at all times thus eliminating the necessity of having to stop often and replenish the drill." SHORTAGE OF HARDWARE SUPPLIES IN NEW ZEALAND (By Consul General Alfred A. Win- slow, Auckland.) There is a very great shortage in New Zealand of all lines of hardware. Within the last few days there has been a jump of $24.33 per ton in the price of wire nails that sold previous to the war at 5c per pound or 5c. pounds fpr 24c, while 1-inch nails are now worth 14c. per pound and 2-inch nails 18c per pound. The pre-war price of corrugated iron was $87.60 per ton, and now this iron is selling; at $389.32 to $437.98 per ton, and almost impossible to obtain at these figures. Ordinary 2-inch wire netting that sold prior to the war at. $1.82 per roll of 50 yards now sells at $.8.15. per roll. All tools< have increased in price from 300 to 400 per cent., and are. difficult to procure at that. Household hardware .such as pots and pans has increased in price about 200 per cent., and enamelware in the same proprtion. -«.>*..«..*~«»*..«>.«'>«~«~ -•«•«•—•"«.••-••••—•-.•..« Davie Vulcanizing Company RETREADS, PLAIN or NON-SKID This work done right, here In our shop. Greatest Greatest THE ORIGINAL FOUR-WHEEL DRIVE MOTOR TRUCK—ELEVENTH YEAR In all truckdom there is no truck similar to the Duplex 4-Wheel Drive. Early in the life of the truck industry, the originators of the four-wheel drive obtained basis patents on the principles which give the Duplex its amazing abilities to perform. These patents have many years to run. . The Duplex 4-Wheel Drive has practically four times the pulling power of any rear wheel dnve truck of equal size and capacity. The truck* loaded to capacity, has the additional power to pull from two to three fully loaded trailers through snow, sand or loam, or up grades that any rear wheel drive truck would find difficult to negotiate with only its own capacity load. Trailer loads are the severest tests of a truck's stamina. The Duplex frame is designed and constructed to absorb and withstand the constant succession of strains on the draw bar resulting from the wrenching jerks of a string of trailers in tow. , .,. , A Duplex 4-Wheel Drive truck, even when loaded to full capacity, cannot be stalled as long as anii one of its four drive wheels can find traction. The Duplex chain case gives it a tremendous reserve power fully ample, when applied to any one of its four wheels, to extricate the truck from any road hole into which it is driven. By throwing a lever at his right hand, the Duplex driver can obtain the tremendous power of 64 crankshaft turns to each revolution of a drive wheel—a power impulse from the motor ror every 2 inches of wheel travel. . Through the use of the Duplex Adler self-locking differentials on both front and rear axles, thc Duplex is able to go and keep going as long as any one of the four wheels can find traction. The Record was published by the Record Publishing Company, which had previously published the paper under a number of different titles, including the Daily Building Record and the British Columbia Building Record.
