Just what.proportion of this estimatee total woulci be Vancouver's share it would be hard to fix definitely, but on one thing most far-sighted local residents are agreed, and that is Vancouver needs a larger building programme right now than any other, city in Canada—even in there are three other cities larger than this in the Dominion. '.'"'.■■,-. Vancouver literally needs thousands of homes. . This marked shortage is felt most in large cities, and particularly in. cities experiencing any increase, in populaton during the war by reason of spine important industrial activity—such as shipbuilding. Vancouver has enjoyed a growth in population during the last two years of the war almost without parallel in the countr^s- history.V^Yet despite 2448—W. J. NAIiLS AT HIGH PRICES PITTSBURG—What some of the steel trade call '.'fancy pegs" are being paid for some of the lighter forms of steel at this time, and-it'promises-'to run the whole gamut of the financed market before the industry! fully.-; recovers its .normal position as to production. The fact that has made this especially apparent is payment «of $G for nails per keg this week, not once; but on several occasions. The* wire this remarkable growth .of over 10,000 j market is practically out of the manu- a year during the last two years of facturers' hands, as mills are workin WANT TENDERS FOR REPAIRS TO DREDGE Tenders are being received to Nov. 24th by the Department of Public Works, Canada for repairs and general overhaul of the Dejartmental Dredge No. 303 ("Fruhling"). Specifications can be seen at the office of A. P. Mitchell, Esq., Acting District Engineer, Victoria, B. C., and at the office of C. C. Worsfbld, Esq., District Engineer, New Westminster B.C., and at 710-713 Birks building, Vancouver. B. C. the war, building construction during the whole; of the war period was prac-. tically suspended. Now this city finds itself unable to take care of its people. The present shortage of houses is placed at from 500 to-1,500, estimating an average of four persons to occupy a dwelling. This condition is retarding Vancouver's growth, constituting a social and economic problem that can only be solved by «, building programme of "full speed ahead." < , Vancouver today offers a particularly favorable field for building investor*. Increasing manufacturing and shipping activities arid a revival soon of normal lumber production are factors that will contribute to the continued rapid growth of the city. Let's take down the* "Move in" signs. Let's make this crowded city fairly blossom with new homes, new apartments and newbusinesB and industrial structures. Those who love the freedom of a home of their own, and appreciate the comforts and satisfaction of a home Scan put a stop to the high rents, make their savings work for them and their family now and in the years to come. Build that home now. STEEL PIPE SCARCE. PITTSBURG—The Pittsburg mark- ' et for steel pipe has developed into a combining operation among jobbers for materials that are most urgent for consumers to have. Jobbers' stocks energetically to ship against long delayed orders and-.cannot consider new business. The jobbing trade is getting a better show, but Is unable to care for the volume of business that is coming from a decidedly awakened building industry as well as in other lines and the nail market is now Up to better than war prices, and all quotations of a nominal character are no longer heard. The leading interest has not changed officially its price of $3.25 pert keg, but this is not possible to get service from, as that interest is out of the market. In fact $3.50 .per keg is no longer a factor, but export business offered at $4.50 and is not attracting much attention for the time. Such values will likely last, it is said, through the current year. Very, little business is considered that will carry the makers into the new year. The values may be re-adjusted before order books are opened, it is said. TENDERS WANTED FOR ''.'"'■* VARIOUS SUB-TRADES Contractor A. L.
