If that statement proves true, financial conditions will probably have so materially changed by the time the next big loan is floated, that the investor will be lucky to get 4% per cent, interest on his money. On these occasions ■we forsook the old ways of-loving our country in secret and developed an earnest/assured, sometimes loud, confidence in Canada and the Canadian Corps, Best of all, it was fully justified. The deeds of the soldiers and the generosity of the people at home were equal to the rhetoric of the speech- maker and the florid enthusiasm of the ■writer. Canadajnade good and Canadians as a whole reached some high peak points of patriotism. Perhaps in these even times the memory of that struggle will maintain for long years a moderated national egotism, which will be of great advantage to the people. Before the war- we were too timid, too doubtful.about the range of Canadian possibility. I^t during the war the nation {jpuhd "itself and at times even crowed lustily. They have not learned the lesson of the war; nor have they correctly gauged the manner in which Vancouver citizens in particular, can rise to an emergency for any good cause—especially when that cause affects the national prosperity. Canadians have shown clearly that .they are sufficiently intelligent to understand public affairs and patriotic jenough to respond to any call -which has the ring of sincerity and the justification of necessity. .For that reason we have every confidence that the Victory Loan of 1919 will be oversubscribed. The patriotic spirit alone would carry it, erven if the people. had not bad experience of the advantages in the purchase and ownership of bonds that are in turn backed by the resources of the entire Dominion. The supply during the summer has been materially curtailed owing to the fact that several quarries which depend on waterpower to run their rock crushers had to shut down for weeks at a time. Then, the recent rains and severe weather did not help matters The prevailing shortage ; of" crusfied rock may also affect a number of other road building and construction jobs in Vancouver. Drury, D.L.S., Victoriar- .Steady Employment nnd Prosperity Hanjjs on Victory-Loan. Canada's future prosperity depends to a great extent upon the success'■of f.ho .Victory Loan. No country can exist upon trnrle within its own boun- oarips'. Canada counts on the trade with Great Britain and other allied countries to keep the Hood of good times in the country. 'The surplus products of the farm arid the factory find their way across the seas. .The revenue of the farmer and the manufacturer is dependent on this trade relationship being sustained. The employment o? many hands depends on the orders that come to the firm. The pay envelope only^comes, with steady employment. Great Britain and overseas''countries are still desirous of continuing trade relations, but, -overwhelmed J with war expenses, they must be given credits for the time being.' The farmer and the manufacturer must be paid for their products and manufactured articles in cash. Therefore, Canada must finance the proposition to keep the tide of commerce coming this way. But in order to have the |i money on hand to do this great thing, Canada must borrow from her people. The Victory, Loan offers bonds to subscribers paying 5% per cent, interest. The guarantee behind ahe bonds makes them an absolutely safe investment. Victory Bonds are accepted as collateral at any bank, and can easily be turned into money at a profit. It is then to the interests of every Canadian to subscribe for all the Victory Bonds he can, for it la profitable, it is patriotic, and it is necessary for the continued prosperity of the country. *rtrt*1rt&+M'+'l>++*^*+^*<%^.4i>*.
