R. Nathanson, vice-president of., the B~ C. Paramount Theatres, that the^ general contract' for the erection of the new Regal Theatre in the 800, block on Seymour Street, near Robson had been awarded to the Dominion Construction .-Company of - this city. The new playhouse which is intended for the display of the! feature films produced by the Canadian Famous Play- ers-Lasky Film Corporation, and under the- somewhat .modified -plans of the owners, will cost slightly over $400,000.... Work is to he started at once on the excavation for the foundation and the construction is to be rushed with all possible dispatch in an effort to have the theatre completed and ready for use next fall. The successful tenderers were the lowest among a number of bidders which comprised prominent firms from all parts of Canada and several American firms. , ! It was also announced by Mr. Nathanson that the well-known local firm of Townley & Matheson had been appointed supervising architects to carry out the construction of the new playhouse according to the revised plans as prepared by Architect Thos. Lamb of Toronto, who also designed a number of similar theatres for this corporation in Winnipeg, Toronto and other Eastern cities. The Dominion Construction Company lost no time in commencing work on the general contract, for material was ordered yesterday and work was actively commenced this morning on the erection of an office and preparing for storage of the necessary material. The contractors state that they are in the market for lumber, lime, brick, tile, cement and reinforcing steel for the new theatre. They expect to place orders for these in a few days. All sub-contracts in connection with the big theatre will be handled through the supervising architects, Townley &. Matheson. The new playhouse will bo of thoroughly fireproof construction throughout. The auditorium will face south and the building proper will be exactly square. WEST BUILDING AND INDUSTRIAL NEWS Good "The Good Food Restaurants (Continued from pay 1) J*TOR RENT" SIGN HAS ALMOST DISAPPEARED FROM CITY. -Significant both of 'the condition of the local real estate market as; well ss the acutely increasing demand for Iranes throughout the city is the al- "3_ost total disappearance of the "_oiv Tent" sign within the city limits of T. ancouver. The time is .still fresh in -the memory of all'.when "for rent" "was the most common sign in evidence throughout the city, but today the "for rent" sign on a residence is -so Tare as to occasion * notice and re- 3naxk when it is seen. A.Vancouver contractor who is interested in the more homes movement .and lias had a considerable number ;«tf liomes under construction at the present time, had occasiori to cover .»-Erly 100 miles of Vancouver resi- 'idence. streets by automobile one day last week, and-during the whole tour 3_e only- encountered one "for rent" B-gn, although he was constantly on the lookout for them. He states that Building Inspector. die found plenty of "for sale" signs up ■MaA also a very few old houses unoccupied and boarded up, but the "for .lent" signs had disappeared. And he '-also saw dozens, yes, scores, of mod- ' ^rate-priced houses going up all over the city; the natural consequence of ^te disappearance of the "for rent" *is*ga. This visible evidence, to be seen by j .any one who looks over the city, ex- :ptai_- the present condition of the "realty market and also the dwelling -construction end of the building mar- -iMtt. The summer holiday migration .any bring out a few "for rent" signs lor a time, but the demand for homes lownt or to buy is still many times each way. Ample exits will be provided owing to the fact that the building will open onto Seymour Street all along one side, while on the other or west side there will be the lane between Seymour and Granville, -where emergency exits will be provided. In addition to this there will be an entrance by a ramp with an easy grade and 25 feet in width, leading from Granville Street, a~ short distance south of the corner of Robson, leading across the alley by a covered, overhead, fireproof bridge of concrete and steel construction, which will lead direct to the balcony level of the theatre. Mr.;Nathanson, accompanied .by Mr. "Fred Townley, and Mr. J. R. Muir, local representative, waited on the building committee of the city council on Tuesday to ask the privilege of changing the distance between the seats in the projected theatre from 2 feet'*8 in., as provided for in the city bylaws, to 2 feet 6 inchest, as prevails in the majority of eastern cities and also in the case of a number of other recent modern theatres this Company has erected. The'applicants had a number of theatre chairs in the.council chamber with which to demonstrate that 2 feet 6 inches was sufficient room. It was brought out by one of the aldermen, however, that the distance between the seats in the new Allen theatre is 2 feet 8 inches, so .the question of altering the bylaw \vas left. to next Monday's council meeting and City Bird ordered to ertson presented Mr. Brown with a suitably, engraved silver cigarette case as a mark of appreciation of his untiring efforts prior to the passage of the long-desired legislation. Mr. Brown who has just been appointel lumber commissioner for British Columbia with headquarters at Toronto, made a suitably worded but modest reply, at the conclusion of which he was tendered musical honors and three times three. Mr. Nathanson also asked for permission to put in a solid, 6-inch timber roofing over the' auditorium portion of the building, instead of a gypsum or asbestos roofing as specified in the bylaw. It was pointed out by Architect Townley that as the ceiling was of steel lath and ornamental plaster and there would be a 13-inch air space between the ceiling and the roof, that a timber, slow-burning roof would fill all requirements from, a fire prevention standpoint as well as the other material. It had the added advantage of being material that would be purchased here without delay, while :f the other material was insisted upon «_eat?r than the available supply and (it would have to be purchased in the Jtllooks as if both thereal estate men eagt and delay might ensue.
