WANT BUILDING BY-LAW ENFORCED. Among the leading and responsible contractors of the city there is a strong movement afoot to secure a stricter and more general enforcement of the city's building bylaw, ment should become somewhat disorganized. The fault, lies.; with the council 'primarily for not': taking ad- i. vantage of the ample time which the former building inspector gave and appointing a successor to R. A. McKenzie. i /But the most common breach" of the city building bylaw regulations is committed by many of the small contractors. Many of these men make a practice of getting construction of small jobs and dwelling houses start-, ed, and often have it well on towards completion before they think of taking out a permit. This of ____ _c th. course, is not only strictly illegal _in_ . .npciallv those sections ot tne and e-peciauy luu not.¥a,„ tn and renders them liable Jo prosecu- hviaw which espec ally pertain to . •' Dyiaw.wn._ii ea... ■',..„_ tht> tion, but is also unfair to the owner the securing of a permit from the city building inspector's office before any actual construction work or alterations costing over $25 are commenced. * It is an-' open secret that for some time past, and especially since the former building inspector, Mr. Robert A. McKenzie, resigned that post, the city's building bylaw has been ob Adkison & Dill GENERAL CONTRACTORS Specialists In Reinforced .Concrete 1.5 Inn SL Siy.37SI-m.l2H for whom they are erecting the. building. Other j common practice — too common I among some contractors who ought to know better—is to take a contract for alterations or repairs, and because they do not know just what precise sum the repairs or alterations may run into, they omit taking out the permit in many known instances until the job is complete. ESTABLISHED I_f 1886 INDUSTRIAL ACTIVITY MARKED It was predicted some weeks ago that the present year would be one of the most active in an industrial and business sense in the history of the interior of British Columbia. That prediction is being proved true by events. Gold mines which were closed for three or four years on account of war conditions are being opened up, while other mining activity is increasing. Farming is undergoing speedy development and many new settlers are arriving. every week, while good prices for ranch produce are resulting in a record number of acres being brought under cultivation. The lumber business is also beeon^ ing more active. The interior of British Columbia has little cause for anxiety as to the effect of;-the: reconstruction period.—Nelson 'News. C. W. WORK STARTS GRADING NEW C. N. R. EXTENSION NEW WESTMINSTER,!— Havjing completed the clearing work on the C. NVR. right-of-way from the yard' limits to L-ytton Square, in good, time last week, the Great War Veterans' Contracting Committee started work Monday on the actual grading of the line. The. expeditious manner in which the war veterans carried out the preliminary clearing operations has'convinced railwaymen and contractors who have watched them that the Veterans' Committee has collected a bunch of experienced men in this class of work. ' .' ', The grading job which the veterans have commenced this week is of considerable magnitude, as it involves the removal of about 30,000 cubic yards of earth comprised in a considerable bluff near the . B. C. Electric- right-of-way. The contract will involve between $18,000 and $,.0,000 and the veterans plan to rush it through as soon as possible so as to allow the men working on this job an opportunity to go to the prairies during the harvesting season. All fhe men employed on the j work are returned soldiers, who are I paid .$4 per day.
