Discussing the transaction The Nelson News says: "The Slocan Star, which is a silver- lead property, has been operated for over twenty years. Six years ago the mine was operating on a large scale and the current earnings allowed much- improvement to -.the property. Up to date machinery was installed, includ-, ing a concentrator and still the property paid large dividends. The reason given for the - failure was that the management did hot provide'sufficient reserve and last year when the chutes failed there was not enough to open up new bodies which ar.e known to exist. Upon the shareholders refusing to be assessed further there was nothing left to do but to wind up the business. with the pro- purchaser has "Those acquainted erty state that the acquired a bargain." ( The Mandy Mining Company has now 9,000 tons of ore at the head of navigation on April 1, awaiting the opening of the lakes and the Saskatchewan river. It is being carried to the Pas, Man., by steamboat and barge, where it is being shipped by rail to Trail. It is expected that ore will come down at the rate of 900 tons a week- during the summer. Three steamboats and six barges/will be put at the work by the Ross Navigation Company. Twelve cars shipped this-month to Trail were freighted by returning teams. In one day there were 1,275 hog's delivered^ auto trucks >,to the South Omaha market, the highest number received in one day. f The shortage of railway cars is responsible for thev increasing popularity of auto truck transportation, and the farmers find that there is considerable > saving in shrinkage and time as compared with rail shipment. From 10 to 20 hogs may be loaded In a truck, and the charge is about 25 cents per 100 pounds up to 25 miles, an additional 10 cents per 100 pounds being added for longer distances.
