Despite the gloomy outlook that has been painted and the arguments that have been put forward giving the false impression that the industry is toj^ tering on its last legs, and that with | the entire 54-acre site. the completion of the I. M. B. contracts the flame of shipbuilding activity is likely to be snuffed out, there is no real cause for alarm, at least this is the opinion of the heads of the shipbuilding firms that are operating on the British Columbia coast. These men know the shipbuilding industry and they are not to be classedjiin the category of pessimists. There is hardly any reason to doubt that long before the last of the wooden hulls laid down-for the Imperial Munitions Board are ready for- launching, additional contracts will have been, signed HUGE STEEL SHIP PLANT AT VANCOUVER TAKING FORM Vancouver, Wash.—The immensity of the erecting shop which is under erection at the Standifer steel shipyards, is now apparent from the first upright bents of the big building which have been erected. The building, which will bo equipped with the latest and most serviceable, electric cranes for handling steel plates, 'will .be nearly 100 feet high to the roof. Concrete foundations have been placed and the erection work is now being rushed. Another big building is practically complete in the frame. Bryce, mining engineer of Porcupine and Cobalt, and Gordon Taylor, of Toronto, will be of tlie party. John A. Mac- Phcrson, of Stanley, .B. C, will meet tlie trio in the Cariboo, and the result of this visit should be u revival of interest in a district rich in mining history and associations. Considerable activity in the copper properties on Barclay Sound is reported by arrivals from Alberni. Many people in Victoria would stand to gain material advantage by any alteration of the situation as it prevails.now, and a restoration to the activity of other times would doubtless prove of value to the whole island community.' The copper properties on the Wost Coast, at East Sooko and Cowichan Lake are all receiving some attention, steady rather than sensational' progress being the rule. Commencing with the present month the Trail smelter has announced its intention to receive lead ore on the old terms. That means that the smelter will pay the ordinary percentage of the value of the ore free from holdbacks. The cause of the change is the improved lead situation. The result should be of considerable value to the mining community of the Kootenays. r_ L I IVS E Diamond Brand has no equal 99.5 per cent pure OBTAINABLE FROM ALL WELL KNOWN DEALERS IN CITY AND COUNTRY Pacific Lime Co., Limited Works, Blubber Bay, B. Only recently the. Fraser Valley Milk Producers' Association purchased a 1-ton Maxwell from the Consolidated Motor Co., and 'last week placed their order for another truck of the .same type. A second Maxwell truck was also delivered to the Amiel Ice Company, 1025 Main street. It is evident that at the owners are well pleased with the performance of these sturdy little trucks. TRUCKS FASTER THAN RAILROADS Motor (.rucks for war use in overland drives from the factory where manufactured to seaport' have been averaging sixt}'-seven miles per day for distances up to COO miles • and higher, yet railroad freight cars in the same zone of country have only been averaging 21.1 miles per day. Both of these figures represent winter possibilities, although the motor truck performance was in the midst of exceptional snow, whereas the railroad .car, situation represented the average for the month of November. TAX ON AUTOMOBILES Ottawa.—The .Acting Minister of Finance ^states that the new ten per cent, duty on automobiles applies to cars in stock before May 1, and sold subsequent to that date. It.does, not apply to; second-hand car sales nor to sales consummated before May 1, even wlien delivery had not been made before that date. PAVED WAY FOR AUTOMOBILE J. B. Duulop invented the pneumatic bicycle tire in 1888, and it was in 1894 that the Duulop company commenced the manufacture of the pneumatic bicycle tire in Can- ade. So that for nearly a quarter of a century Canada has been vitally interested in this industry. 'That event is probably the most remarkable thing in the whole history of tire events which followed, because the success of the motorcycle and the automobile have been largely based in the success of the pneumatic tire, which in their case, of course, was at first merely an enlargement of the Dunlop bicycle tire. The success of the bicycle in its present form hinges on the introduction of the pneumatic tire principle, which, as noted previously, undoubtedly has been one of the most beneficial events that man's genius has brought about. This statement ought to clear up a point that does not seem to be appreciated by as many people as it might be: that the automobile itself, as far as the tire proposition is concerned, is not basic, but is an evolution, of the pneumatic tire idea, which was brand new with the bicycle. This, is what has made riding comfortable and universally popular. ANTI-SKID • "Pa, why. did they send Columbus home in ,chains?" "I guess so he couldn't slip anything over on them."
