This i» in acting as expert valuators for these liouses and often settling a vexed .question on which owner and prospective purchaser seemed to be far *part'and unable to agree. In many "•cases of this nature lately, after it looked as if a deadlock had been -■reached on the question of present ~v«lne of the house under sale, the difficulty has been settled by a valuation fixed by an architect called in for that purpose,- whose estimate both parties had agreed to accept. While it was Inevitable that high "building costs would impose economi- •cal -construction on houses built during the las t year or so, especially - aomng those who think of home-buy- 4n$ in terms of dimes instead of dollars, there is nb valid excuse for a "person to make his purchase, as the -saying goes, "sight unseen." There is Mivcry reason why the. home buyer -should ignore thebuilder's statement ithat the dwelling is'Vbuilt right" and «cmmine it for himself down to ithe : aninntest particular,1 every detail: of istruction. And then 'if not satis- tiat he is getting a" fair deal his «utternative is to emphatically refuse '~*»'*u.y.-7 Cheap, inferior houses — houses ""•Such are an eyesore to a community .-—will be built and sold as long as the -liome-buyer is willing to pay for them. JThe defence against cheap construction at a high cost is" in the purchaser's hands. He has the money *nd it is as easy to say."no" as "yes." it be feels incompetent to judge of "What constitutes ' first-class construc- * tion, why not call on the services of some reputable architect, who is perhaps the best qualified of any profession connected with the building ''trade to pass capable judgment on sncli a question. Part-of every architect's stock in trade, in fact, is an «xact knowledge of building values *uid the cost of what ,goes into a -dwelling to make or mar it. And this knowledge is available to the home- seeker at a very small fee considering •what it may save the prospective 3iouse purchaser. ROAD MAKING PLANT STARTS OPERATIONS .With the distinction of having what is_ conceded, to be the most modern arid "up-to-date plant of its' kind in British Columbia, Messrs. Harrison & Lamond have commenced, operations of the first unit of their new lithta road-making compoieiid; factory on In: dustrial Island. , .The firm has a large amount of work ahead of them and the plant will be kept busy at nearly full capacity for some time. They will ".make a specialty of warehouse floors, lawn tennis courts and driveways, and the beautiful and durable surface they are able to 'put on promises to secure them all of that line of. work they can handle. The firm will also commence work this week on the government road paving job on Lulu Island which had to be temporarily discontinued recently owing to the frost. In tlie new plant on Industrial Island everything is devised to be as nearly automatic in operation as possible and thus eliminate all labor of handling. It is planned to have a deeper channel dredged to allow leaded scows to be taken to the foot of the lot and unload direct into the bunkers.' The gravel and "rock from these scows will then be taken by automatic conveyors' to bunkers from which it will run by gravity into a large 36-foot revolving drier. When dry it drops into pit, from where it is conveyed by an endless chain of buckets to overhead bins, where it is automatically sorted and the different grades and sizes each, go into its own particular bin. It is then automatically measured in 100-pound boxes prior to falling into the mixing pans. After mixing it again drops by gravitation into motor trucks, and is taken j to the different works under way. Thus from the time.the scow-load of raw material lands until it is a finished product gracing some fine roadway or permanent flooring, no part of it will be handled by hand, nor can any mistake enter into the exact proportions of tlie compound.
