What, is materially stimulating the "Build Your Own Home Movement" is the unwillingness of those .who make a business of building houses for rent to make further investments j along the same lines. It seems ai together probable that apart, from or-, ganized provincial, or municipal effort, development will be largely confined to the activities of individuals lands of choice business properties, are said to be confined almost wholly of late to those contemplating the building of their own homes. Spencer in the chair. .It.was decided that an audi- question in'the School Board offices torium capable ; of holding at least fi.OOO people should be built as 30011 as possible. A plan of campaign and methods for financing the project will be discussed at a future meeting at tion than is usually the case whore j which all the public and semi-public houses are thrown together for the purpose of quick sale or to derive, rev- their families again, are more with than ever determined to,;.be in home-owning <;lass, even if taxes are high. The scarcity of houses to rent at almost any price, and unsnitability of many of those available to the needs of families is leading to a very noticeable inquiry for suitable sites 1 and' investigation into costs of material and construction and costs of homes already erected. Just how serious the housing problem is in Greater Vancouver may be appreciated from the fact that the City Housing Commission, which stated some time early last spring that at least 200 new liplises were required then, has now changed its latest revised estimate to a minimum of 1,000 new homes required in Vancouver alone. There are.at least another 500 new dwellings'* needed in the various suburbs of the city that go to make up Greater Vancouver. So that it is a cafe estimate to say that there is need, or at least room for at least 2,000 hew dwellings in Greater Vancouver in enue from renting. The man who is building, for himself will make sure that the structure is built to last and is lacking in those vents that make many homes practicalls' uninhabitable during the winter months. In reality, the cost of owning a home bodies in the city will be represented. Put your money into VV. S. Stamps. tjie! today is litt'e greater than in pre-war days. It is true that labor and materials have advanced, but the prices at which building sites are obtainable is much more reasonable•'- than in the days of the real estate boom immediately preceding the war. The plans have all been approved, the sites selected and just as soon as the'transfer of' the first $20,000 of the appropriation is made, the contracts will be awarded for this first half dozen dwellings, under the new housing plan. The municipality has already received fifty applications from returned men under the Soldier's Housing Act, and more are being added at an average of several a weeU. In view of the -fact.that .Point Greys grant is only $54,000 in all for this purpose, i and as this sum will not be sufficient I to erect all the houses already applied for, it has been practically decided j that the municipality wiU ask the provincial government to increase the amount over that originally allotted. All other, necessary details have been completed in connection wiyi Point Grey's part in the housing scheme. The agreement between the ) government and the municipality was [approved at the last meeting of the I council and everything now ' awaits j the receipt of the; first instalment of j $20,000 to commence operations. There are also sufficient worxmen in i sight despite the strike, it is stated, j to ensure rapid progress on the first j half dozen, buildings.
