The British Columbia Record Is the official organ of The Architectural Institute of British Columbia, federated with The Royal Architectural Institute of Canada, and The Engineering & Technical Institute of British Columbia, and as such is used by them as the medium through which to make their official announcements to the general public. By such selection the British Colum Right in the middle of New Westminster's business district Mr. Thomas found another bad fire trap, and this particular case was one where if the fire had ever started—and it had plenty of chances to start every day— $10,000 was considerably the lowest for the work. Although the building will have accommodation for four- class rooms, it is only, intended to furnish two of these rooms at the present time, although the demand for additional accommodation „may require the other two by next February. MINING bia Record is no wise p?ei«ed to- edl; it would have licked up a whole block torial support of any policy advanced by these societies, but maintains an absolutely independent position on all .matters subject to editorial opinion. FIRE TRAPS.IN BUSINESS CENTRE In these" days when high insurance rates are keeping pace with the high cost of living and buildings of all ' kinds, both business and residental, »re all too scarce, it is certainly surprising, not to say criminally negligent, for any local firm or individuals to endanger other buildings in the crowded business district by maintaining such a fire trap as that .which J. A. Thomas, provincial fire prevention fofficer, called the., attention .of Fire Chief Carlisle to a few days ago. , In a letter to Fire Chief Carlisle Mr. Thomas called the former's attention to a building at 135 Hastings street, ■where he reported that on the second ■floor of the building he found condi- "tions such as he characterized as "the worst fire trap 4n the city." He declared that he found piles of waste •paper, oily rags, excelsior, broken wood all lying around loose, and right in the middle of all this inflammable debris there was being operated a tool and die factory. Part of the equipment 'of this factory was a gas heater placed on a wooden base, the wood of the latter being almost hot enough to burst into "flame. How it had not done so, Mr. Thomas said was almost a, miracle. Mr. Thomas characterized such a etate of affairs right" in the middle of the business district and surrounded by buildings of a good type but not of frame buildings, thereby starting a conflagration which would have endangered the whole city possibly, and rendered a repetition probably of the fire destruction of 190S; While conditions in the matter of fire hazards, are constantly growing better in Vancouver, Mr. Thomas states that there are a number of bad hazards yet, especially in the case of two garages in the west end of the city. With the keen co-operation which the local fire department is giving him Mr. Thomas has every hope for continued improvement! The -Inland Mining Company of Walla Walla has purchased the Gran- ite-Poorman mine near 'Nelson, "B. C. from the Kootenay Gold Company, for $60,000, according to a report from that town. Alfred Batcho'lcl will be managing director and work will be commenced at once on a deep crosscut tunnel. This is. one of the best known mines in the Nelson district. It has produced a large amount of gold. OPENS SHEET METAL WORKS ON RICHARDS ST. Mr. Alex. In fact many people are finding a much better demand than they had dared to .anticipate for this summer. It was thought some months ago that it would take lower prices to start a general revival of trade, and when it was seen that it was not going to be possible to bring about any material cut in prices there Avas a fear that trade might be dull for a long period. However, for some time the consuming trade has shown a disposition to ignore high prices and go ahead.
