PREDICTS INDUSTRIAL ACTIVITY
NEW YORK.—Predicting that the
country will "get back into its normal
swing" within six months after the
signing of the peace treaty, Secretary
of Labor Wilson declared in an address here Saturday that the nation
faces eight or ten years of "tlie greatest industrial activity ever known "
MAY STRICTLY FORCE
CIVIC REGULATIONS
FOR ALL SIGN BOARDS
Tn addition to stricter enforcement
of the city's building regulations and
insistence upon old and unsightly
i buildings being either torn down or
removed, the civic building committee, it is understood, also plan to insist upon compliance in the hear future on the part of all sign and bill
boards in the city with the hitherto
overlooked regulations which govern
the placing of these hoardings.
A couple of years before the outbreak of the war the city council
amended the bylaw governing bill and
sign boards to provide that in business districts these must be set back
at least three feet from the property
line and in residential districts at
least seventeen feet from the property,
line After that most of the new bill
boards -which were erected in .various
portions of the city were so placed as
to conform with the amended regulations, but very few, if any, of the old
boards were removed or changed to
correspond with the bylaw. The owners or lessees of the bill boards were
notified and given six months to
make the necessary changes, Then
came the outbreak of war, and .under
the plea that they were, being put to
heavy expense at a time of great financial stringency and that their
revenue from advertising had ;dropped
to nothing, the city council gave the I
bill board owners and bill posting}
firms until the end of the war
make the necessary changes.
site on which to rebuild the Morrison
Wire-& Steel works recently destroyed by fire. Tlie company has leased
lots on Industrial Island and will very
shortly erect a temporary building to
house their machinery while plans for
an up-to-date factory, on a much larger scale than the onerdestroyed by fire
are being prepared. Further details
will be published in these columns in
the near future.
The location of this industry on Industrial Island adds another to the already imposing list of establishments
located on this tract.
