It is pleasing to note, even amid the typical semi-independence of the west, that big industrial firms like the Wallace Shipyards, and the Powell River Company, are making intelligent and .carefully directed efforts on a large scale to cope with the problem of industrial housing for their employees. They are to a certain extent, pioneering the way and others, who are now carefully studying the problem, are sure to follow. The intelligent study of industrial housing-like almost every other social and economic problem, must begin with an examination of the effects of the war. In 1914 a British statesmen declared that the war would set. back the march of social progress fifty years. The reverse seems to have actually occurred. ■"" In England, as well as Canada, the war has made possible a multitude of experiments in social reconstruction and co-operation which, in times of peace, could scarcely have been accomplished In a couple of generations of agitation. Both employer and employed have found their most sacred principles not only chal- Jenged but .'arbitrarily' swept away. SO. VANCOUVER PERMITS 35S0-—C. G.
