The n w school will be one of the largest in a municipality rhat is .already noted for its fine edu- cntional ""Institutions which include among others, the new University of British Columbia. It was originally intended to erect an eight room school on this site, hut the large increase in the population rt^this section ot- Point Grey, dueHo the influx of many new'families, and the consequent increased demand for school accommodation, has called for a complete revision of the original, f.lans for schQOl buildings in this section of the* municipality. The new. school is ultimately intended to have sixteen class rooms, but for the present, however, only one wing or a building to contain eight class rooms will be erected. Later, when further accommodation is needed, it is planned to add the other additional eight ci;u?K rooms, while at the same time, I rovision is also made so that further auditions can be made in tiro form of another wing. The first unit of the new school however, will be a very complete one, and in addition to the eight class rooms-, will contain a large-assembly hali and auditorium, principal's, teachers' and* medical inspector's rooms. The construction will be of reinforced concrete throughout. Like most mod- (Continued on Fane 2) PU1LPOT-8V1ACDONALD Co.,Ltd. Western Specialty Iitalted 572 Granville St. - Soy. 3520 CANADA'S FOREST WEALTH IN DANGER OF BEING DEVASTED Excepting only Siberia, no land can compare with Canada as a timber reserve. From Labrador to the Alaskan boundary we have a belt-of woodland averaging perhaps five to eight hundred miles in width, which, with the exception of a certain proportion of mus.- keg and a much smaller one of naked rock, carries soft wood timber, over its whole surface. Much of this timber is of inferior value as lumber, but it makes the finest, pulp-stock available today. What the-future1, niay bring-in-the way of newly discovered material is beyond conjecture, but as the case stands. Canadian .spruce is, the ideal of the paper manufacturer. Moreover, it grows in bewildering quantities. To thp. casual observer it would seem im- .possible, for Canada,'s small population to make an appreciable inroad in this en<Jrmous growth of the .sub- Arctic' forest. So we "go on slashing and burning and wasting one of the most valuable assets a kindly Providence has granted to us. The truth as known to such forestry- experts as those of th* .Commission of Conservation is, unfortunately, quite' different. No forest growth can stand" such reckless mis-management as ours is getttng without eventually falling. The day may be yet distant but it will come just as surely as.day follows night unless we make a radical change in our plans. Just now, according to the Department of Trade and Commerce, there is a marked inclination to turn toward Canada for much of the timber heretofore imported by British merchants from the Baltic. It is an opportunity such as has not yet occurred for the Dominion to step in and seize a much larger share of the British market than has been ours in the past, but -the opening of such new. avenue of export will mean a yet heavier drain on rur timber resources, so common sense should tell the, Canadian^ lumberman j that reckless* slashing and burning is | a waste of what must have an increas ■ ■ in?: value as the .years go by. If he !has not the wisdom to see this, or ; lacks the necessary self-restraint to .assist in protection, then there should ON EVE OF BUILDING REVIVAL Unless unusually sure signs and indications fail, Vancouver and the surrounding municipalities are unquestionably on the eve of a building re-, vival the likes of which has not been eince .the memorable boom clays of 1910-12. By. March, or April of the coming year we expect to find architects and contractors' overwhelmed with work. Everything points to that desirable . state of affairs. The demand for' more buildings, especially dwellings, has been keenly felt for some time and is gradually becoming more acute. Labor conditions will adjust themselves shortly; prices will soon be at a stationery level and banking interests will be prepared to make liberal loans for construction purposes. The demand for larger premises and increased store room will soon result in the construction of business blocks and similar structures that will mean increased activity in all the various sub-trades that enter into such buildings. TENDERS INVITED FOR LARGE SLUICING JOB (Continued from'Page 1) at an essimated cost of $192,000. Two alternate bids are being asked on this work. One will require that the fill material be taken from the site of the proposed new pier at Smith Cove and the other Will permit of the contractor obtaining the material at any point available. The . second project is * the grading and sidewalking bt Wilson Avenue and other streets in the vicinity of Seward Park. This work is figured to cr>st $87,497 by the city engineer. - The third undertaking calls for lay- in*- concrete walks and grading of West -59th Street at a cost of $16,500. It will be' necessary for the successful contractor to |pmove 5400 cubic yards of material in performing ,the work called for in this contract. PLANS ANOTHER BIG POINT GREY SCHOOL (Contirnied from pag-e 1.) era schools, the building will be two stories high with a full concrete basement. The exterior will be of brick finish with interior walls of hollow tile,, which should make the building un easy one to heat during the winter months. The brick exterior will be pleasingly relieved . with art stone dressings while a slate roof will add lu the fireproof nature of the building. Tho -floors will all be finished with Sa'i San surfacing while the heating throughout will be by steam. Ample provision wjll also bo made for good ventilation by a natural exhaust system, i The architects expect to have the plaus ready about the middle of January. HOME BANK TAKES OVER PREMISES ADJOINING To meet the demand for larger quarters necessitated by increased business, ■ the Home Bank of Canada has secured the premises adjoining those.they now occupy, and will move into them shortly. Tire premises in question are those at the' southeast corner of Richards and Hastings street, formerly occupied by the Union Bank of Canada, and have now been r taken over by the Home Bank. N'o alterations to the building are planned at present, as the1 quarters were laid out and equipped for banking purposes. WHO'S WHO, WHERE AND WHY, IN LOCAL BUILDING CIRCLES v- -S Col. E. J.
