 THE LILLOOET
Vol. I No. 28
SATURDAY, JANUARY 28, 1911
Birth- To Mr. and Mrs. R.
Hoey, of Lillooet, on Thursday,
January 19, at Vancouver,— a
son.
The Howe Sound surveyors are
just outside town and will have
completed their survey in a few
days.
C. Macgee of Empire Valley,
who has been visiting in our
midst, returned home on Saturday
Roy Burkholder, rancher of
North Fork, Bridge River, made
a flying visit to the coast.
P. Santini, rancher, is spending a few days in town this
week.
Fred. Johnson of Vancouver
left for the coast last week on
a business trip. He says that
Lillooet looks good to him.
M. R. Eagleson, proprietor of
the Victoria Hotel, returned this
week from his trip to the coast
cities.
G. Deruet, who was prospecting on the North Fork of Bridge
river, returned to town on Sunday.
J. R. Mackenzie, storekeeper
of Pemberton Meadows, arrived
in town this week en route for
the coast, with a large shipment
of skins.
W. Riley Sr., rancher of Pa-
chelqua, spent a few days in
town this week. Mr. Riley is
one of our pioneers; he was accompanied by William Dickey.
£. Middlecoff, a mining man
of Seattle, arrived in town this
week, and is the guest of J. T.
Mellott and J. Johnson,miners of
Cayoosh creek.
Rev. H. Bromwich will not be
able to come over here next
month owing to a Cantata which
he is getting up at Ashcroft. He
hopes to be able to preach here
the first Sunday in March.
Over Seas Club
The meeting of the Over Seas
Club, which was to have taken
place on Saturday evening last,
was postponed, and will be held
to-night at 8 o'clock. A full attendance is requested, as the
election of officers is to take
place.
HAVE SEIZED PAN-ASIATI(N£l23©eKING FOR
ARMED SHIP MOVEMENT SMUGGLERS
New York.-A special to the
Herald from Truxillo, Honduras,
by wireless to Key West, says
that after two hours of defiance
from General Bonila, Commander
H. Davis, of the United States
cruiser Tacoma, seized the armed
ship Hornet, General Bonils's
chief asset, cast the rebel crew
ashore, manned her with gunners
and engineers and ordered her
out of the inner harbor. The
Hornet's recent movements up
and down the coast were taken
In the light of threatened, hostilities against Honduras by Commander Davis.
Charged With Murder
Bakersfield, Cal.—Because J.
C. Hanrahan, a workman in the
oilfields, refused to stop when he
commanded him to, Joe Lillard,
a bartender, shot and instantly
killed him last night about 11.30
o'clock. Hanaahan is said to
have quarrelled wfth a woman in
the rear of the saloon. He is
the son of well-to-do parents,
who live in Chicago. Lillard
was arrested and is being held to
answer the charge of murder.
Death of General Summers
Portland, Ore. -General Summers, of Civil and Philippine war
fame, died here last night of
pneumonia, after an illness of
two days. General Summers was
60 years of age.
Hopelessly Insane
London.—Robert Buchler, who
attempted to obtain funds from
the Bank of England on Monday
by threatening the lives of officials, was committed today to
an asylum as hopelessly insane,
upon the order of a magistrate.
Buchler arrived here from the
United States on January 16.
Surprise Party
A very pleasant time was spent
last Saturday evening when about
twenty of the young townsfolk
drove out to give Mr. and Mi's.
I. Hunt a surprise party. The
party went in two sleighs. The
climatical conditions were all that
could be desired, and a right
jolly time was spent by all.
Victoria. — A Pars-Asiatic movement tending to unite all Asiatic
countries has been formed in
Japan, according to the advices
brought by the Sado Maru. The
promoters are Japan natior.al
leaders and other politicians. In
their manifesto they speak of
the necessity of Asiatics cessing
to regard each other with jealousy, or to remain indolent and
the desirability of Asian countries
to unite to make Asia supreme.
A society known as the 'Asia
Righteous Society" has been
formed and branches will be established in China, Siam, India.
Persia, Afghanistan, Turkey and
other countries.
High Voltage Saved Him
Tacoma. — B. N. Merry, a lineman of the Pacific Coast Power
Company, had a narrow escape
from death, last night, when he
short-circuited COOO volts of electricity through his body while
working on a broken switch at
Puyulapp. Merry escaped death
because of the high voltage, and
was fortunate in that he escaped
short - circuiting a 22,000 line
which was attached to an adjoining switch.
Merry is in a rather serious
condition although the physicians
say he will recover. After the
current had passed through his
body he was in some way thrown
from the switch, and the connection was broken by a trick of the
electricity itself. He then crawled into the street from the transformer, where he had been working alone. His hands and feet
were slightly burned.
Price of Beef Raising
Vancouver. — Mr. P. Burns,
head of the cattle and meat firm
of P. Burns & Company, announced to-day on his arrival from
the east that, on account of the
hard winter in Alberta and the
consequent rise in the price of
hay and other fodder, the price
of beef would make a material
advance in the near future. Pork
and mutton will also move up
the scale, but not to such a great
extent as beef.
Los Angeles.--Willi the coas*
from the Mexican line to Mot-
terety guarded more closely th;ui
ever before, the U. Si revenue
cutters Orient ad Bear, both
heavily armed, are today searching Southern California waters
for a smuggling craft bearing
contraband Chinese and opium
which is known to be seeking an
unprotected point on the coast to
make a landing. Anticipating a
landing between Canta larbara
and San Luisobispo, immigration
officials have gathered i.i force
along that part of the coast.
May Visit Canada
London. -The Dublin Express
says that unless Earl Grey can
be induced to extend his occupancy of the governor-generalship of Canada, the Duke of Con-
naught will have to abandon his
succession to that post. The
King's long absence in India will
necessitate something like a tem-
porate regency and the Duke of
Connaught is the only person
fully quallifted to act. The Express further says that their
Majesties may extend their tour
to include Australia, S'th Africa
and Canada,
