The s o u n d of p a n p i p e s a n n o u n c e s t h e arrival of t h e b i r d c a t c h e r P a p a g e n o . H e c l a i m s t h a t it w a s h e w h o k i l l e d t h e d r a g o n . The Three Ladies r e a p p e a r , p a d l o c k P a p a g e n o ' s m o u t h a s p u n i s h m e n t for l y i n g , a n d p r e s e n t T a m i n o w i t h a p o r t r a i t o f t h e Q u e e n ' s d a u g h t e r , P a m i n a . T a m i n o falls i n s t a n t l y in l o v e w i t h her. The Q u e e n herself a p p e a r s a n d urges T a m i n o to r e s c u e her d a u g h t e r f r o m t h e w i c k e d S a r a s t r o , w h o is h o l d i n g h e r c a p t i v e . T h e r e l u c t a n t P a p a g e n o is o r d e r e d t o a c c o m p a n y T a m i n o . T h e T h r e e L a d i e s g i v e T a m i n o a m a g i c flute a n d P a p a g e n o a c h i m e of m a g i c b e l l s t o g u a r d t h e m a g a i n s t d a n g e r s . T h e T h r e e Spirits will guide a n d protect them. In S a r a s t r o ' s p a l a c e , P a m i n a h a s f a i l e d in a n a t t e m p t t o e s c a p e , M o n o s t a t o s , a s e r v a n t o f S a r a s t r o , h a s r e c a p t u r e d her. P a p a g e n o h a s f o u n d his w a y i n t o t h e p a l a c e , w h e r e h e c o m e s f a c e to f a c e with M o n o s t a t o s . Equally terrified b y t h e sight of o n e a n o t h e r , t h e y f l e e . P a p a g e n o r e t u r n s , r e c o g n i z e s P a m i n a a n d tells h e r t h a t T a m i n o h a s b e e n s e n t t o r e s c u e her. T h e T h r e e Spirits l e a d T a m i n o i n t o t h e t e m p l e , w h e r e h e l e a r n s f r o m t h e S p e a k e r t h a t S a r a s t r o is n o t y r a n t , a s t h e Q u e e n h a d m a i n t a i n e d , b u t a m a n of w i s d o m . V o i c e s f r o m t h e t e m p l e r e a s s u r e T a m i n o t h a t P a m i n a is a l i v e . In j o y f u l a n t i c i p a t i o n , T a m i n o p l a y s t h e m a g i c flute. W i l d b e a s t s arrive. P a p a g e n o a n d P a m i n a h e a r t h e f l u t e a n d s e t off t o f i n d T a m i n o . M o n o s t a t o s a n d his s l a v e s try t o r e c a p t u r e t h e f l e e i n g p a i r , b u t P a p a g e n o r e m e m b e r s his m a g i c bells a n d their c a p t o r s d a n c e harmlessly a w a y . A f a n f a r e a n n o u n c e s t h e arrival of Sarastro. P a m i n a confesses to him that she w a s running a w a y from Monostatos, to w h i c h S a r a s t r o r e p l i e s t h a t t h e o n l y r e a s o n h e is h o l d i n g h e r c a p t i v e is t o k e e p h e r f r o m h e r m o t h e r ' s m a l i g n i n f l u e n c e . T a m i n o is b r o u g h t in a s a c a p t i v e b y M o n o s t a t o s . P a m i n a a n d T a m i n o recognise e a c h other a n d e m b r a c e . Monostatos d e m a n d s that they b e p u n i s h e d , but Sarastro s e n d t h e m a w a y to b e purified b e f o r e u n d e r g o i n g trials o f i n i t i a t i o n , a n d M o n o s t a t o s is p u n i s h e d in their p l a c e .  ACT II. Sarastro a n n o u n c e s that Tamino wishes admission to the o r d e r of t h e a s s e m b l e d priests. T h e g o d s h a v e d e c r e e d t h a t P a m i n a a n d T a m i n o a r e d e s t i n e d for e a c h o t h e r , b u t first t h e y m u s t u n d e r g o trials. T w o p r i e s t s i m p o s e a v o w o f s i l e n c e o n T a m i n o a n d P a p a g e n o . T h e T h r e e L a d i e s a p p e a r a n d try t o l u r e t h e m b a c k t o t h e Q u e e n . T a m i n o a n d P a p a g e n o resist a n d t h e L a d i e s a r e b a n i s h e d b y v o i c e s from within t h e Temple. In S a r a s t r o ' s p a l a c e , M o n o s t a t o s f i n d s P a m i n a s l e e p i n g a n d d e s i r e s t o kiss her. T h e Q u e e n o f t h e N i g h t a r r i v e s . S h e g i v e s P a m i n a a k n i f e a n d o r d e r s h e r t o kill S a r a s t r o . S w e a r i n g v e n g e a n c e , t h e Q u e e n disappears. Monostatos has overheard everything a n d o f f e r s t o c a r r y o u t t h e d e e d h i m s e l f if P a m i n a r e p a y s h i m w i t h h e r l o v e . W h e n s h e r e j e c t s M o n o s t a t o s , h e tries t o kill h e r . S a r a s t r o intervenes a n d comforts Pamina. T h e o r d e a l s c o n t i n u e . P a p a g e n o is c o n f r o n t e d b y a n o l d w o m a n w h o c l a i m s t h a t s h e is his b e l o v e d , m u c h t o P a p a g e n o ' s d i s m a y . S h e d i s a p p e a r s a n d t h e T h r e e Spirits a r r i v e , r e t u r n i n g t h e m a g i c flute a n d bells to T a m i n o a n d P a p a g e n o , a s well a s b r i n g i n g t h e m f o o d a n d d r i n k . T a m i n o p l a y s t h e flute, w h i c h is h e a r d b y P a m i n a , w h o r u s h e s in. R e m e m b e r i n g his v o w o f s i l e n c e , T a m i n o r e f u s e s t o s p e a k t o h e r . P a m i n a m i s i n t e r p r e t s T a m i n o ' s s i l e n c e , falls i n t o d e s p a i r a n d p r e p a r e s t o t a k e h e r o w n life. S a r a s t r o s e n d s T a m i n o a w a y t o p r o c e e d w i t h his i n i t i t a t i o n . H e a n d P a m i n a a r e c o m m a n d e d to bid e a c h other farewell. Grief-stricken, P a m i n a tries t o kill h e r s e l f . T h e T h r e e Spirits a p p e a r a n d r e a s s u r e h e r t h a t T a m i n o ' s l o v e is t r u e . A priest informs P a p a g e n o t h a t h e h a s b e e n d e n i e d initiation. P a p a g e n o , c o n t e n t to drink a n d b e merry, e x p r e s s e s n o r e g r e t . H e r e c e i v e s a n o t h e r visit f r o m t h e o l d w o m a n , a n d , u n d e r t h r e a t of i m p r i s o n m e n t , a g r e e s t o b e faithful t o her. A t t h a t m o m e n t s h e r e v e a l s h e r s e l f t o b e P a p a g e n a : t h e w o m a n o f his d r e a m s . U n f o r t u n a t e l y , s h e is h u r r i e d a w a y b y a p r i e s t b e f o r e P a p a g e n o c a n e m b r a c e her. T w o a r m e d g u a r d s s t a n d a t t h e e n t r a n c e t o t h e trials. T a m i n o is a t l a s t j o i n e d b y P a m i n a . S h e t a k e s his h a n d , tells h i m t o p l a y t h e flute, a n d l e a d s h i m t h r o u g h t h e g a t e s . P r o t e c t e d b y t h e m a g i c f l u t e , t h e y p a s s s a f e l y t h r o u g h trials o f fire a n d w a t e r . P a p a g e n o , l a m e n t i n g t h e loss o f P a p a g e n a , is a b o u t t o h a n g himself. T h e T h r e e Spirits i n t e r r u p t h i m a n d tell h i m t h a t h e c a n s u m m o n his b e l o v e d w i t h his m a g i c b e l l s , P a p a g e n a r e a p p e a r s . M o n o s t a t o s has joined the Q u e e n of the Night a n d the Three L a d i e s in a f i n a l a t t e m p t t o u n d e r m i n e S a r a s t r o . T h e i r p o w e r , h o w e v e r , is b r o k e n a n d t h u n d e r a n d l i g h t n i n g hurl t h e m i n t o darkness.
