Description
The Ancient Guanyin Temple (觀音古廟) (ศาลเจ้ากวนอิม San Tchaw Kuan Im) is a Buddhist temple in Bangkok, Thailand. This one room neighborhood temple was constructed during the reign of King Rama V, roughly from 1853-1910, as specified by the temple caretaker. The caretaker said that the temple was bombed during the Japanese invasion of Thailand in 1941, but was later rebuilt. The temple regularly hosts chanting groups, the majority of whom were specified to be Teochew Chinese (唐人). The caretaker stated that the temple has no state support, but does regularly pay money to a Chinese foundation. It is not known to what extent the temple has been renovated, nor how often, but the most recent set of renovations occured in 2021. The following photos show the patio of the temple, which was also used as a seating area for those who bought the food vendors were making outside of the temple. It was stated that the food vendors rent the temple patio for 4,000 baht/month. Image 01 shows the right side of the front patio. On this side there is a collection of mosaic and painted panels of figurative and mythological art. Above, there is a decorated beam with winged lions, likely Pixiu (貔貅) and oceanic (crab) and floral motifs. The position of the beam is viewable in Image 02 with a detailed close-up of beam in Image 03 - displaying mythological themes of humanoid figures, oceanic creatures, and dragons. The collection of painted murals is detailed in Images 04; 05; 06. Image 04 shows the rightmost middle painting of stone of a flowering tree. Image 05 shows a lower panel of the right side, showing bamboo. Image 06 shows the rightmost upper panel, showing a mythological figure, likely Shoulao (壽老), the God of Longevity. Image 07 shows the lower corner of the right patio, showing a vase of flowers. Image 08 shows the upper panel of the right front patio, showing a peony painting with a butterfly (possibly fresco).
