In this episode, Dr. McNally revisits the history of nativism and anti-foreignism during the years leading up to the Meiji Restoration, finding the late-Tokugawa period far more cosmopolitan than expected. We discuss early modern Japanese relations with the Ryukyu kingdom, the conversion of Ryukyu into Okinawa, and the history of Japanese emigration to Hawaii.
