Prediction of Health Risk Behaviours based on Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) Ravichander, Vani

Abstract

Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) includes a variety of traumatic experiences that might be experienced by an individual between the ages of 0 to 17 years. This paper explores how the experience of adverse childhood events might predict an individual’s engagement with risky health behaviours, focusing mainly on substance use behaviours, particularly involving drug use and alcohol consumption as well as risky sexual behaviour. These behaviours are analyzed through the lens of two health psychology models, namely the Biopsychosocial Model and the Theory of Planned Behaviour. Additionally, the paper discusses protective factors that might mitigate the effects of ACEs.
