A Moo-ral Dilemma : The Ethics of Cultured Meat Udupa, Dheemahi
Abstract
Growing concerns about animal welfare and the environmental impact of the meat industry have driven the development of cultured meat. Cultured meat aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and animal suffering by growing animal cells in bioreactors. While promising, cultured meat still relies on animal-derived products like fetal bovine serum (FBS) and invasive biopsy techniques, raising ethical concerns. Additionally, the lack of industrial-scale production makes sustainability claims speculative. This paper explores the potential ethical concerns of cultured meat and its broader consequences for the public and the greater research field.
