Assessing the nutritional and social impacts of the Little Mountain Neighbourhood House’s community gardening initiatives in Vancouver, British Columbia, 2021 Austin, Delanie; Toomey, Ebba Hooft; Loucks, Emma
Abstract
The Little Mountain Neighbourhood House (LMNH) is a grassroots volunteer driven organization that aims to address the needs present within the Little Mountain Neighbourhood in Vancouver, BC. The Neighbourhood House hosts two community gardening initiatives, the Riley Park Community Garden (RPCG) and the Yard Garden Harvest Program (YGHP), which aim to tackle food insecurity while enhancing community engagement. Since both of these initiatives rely on grant funding for their continued operation, this project sought to demonstrate the strengths of the community gardening programs through assessing their nutritional and social impacts. Overall, this report evaluates LMNH’s community gardening programs, in alignment with the following project objectives: To assess the 2021 nutritional contributions of the community gardening initiatives’ yields in terms of calories, macronutrients, and select micronutrients. To assess the impacts of volunteering with the YGHP and/or RPCG on participants' wellbeing, sense of community, knowledge of food systems, and skill development.
