Chaotic Drip Patterns : Comparisons in the flow of Water and Oil from Milk Jugs Zhang, David; Forssander-Song, Lukas
Abstract
Though often associated with large, macroscopic phenomena like the weather, chaos can be found in simple systems such as dripping water. The periodic and chaotic drip patterns of water and oil were observed and compared using milk jugs. Periodic and chaotic drip patterns were analyzed graphically using measurements of time intervals between drops. Using water, we were able to observe both periodic and chaotic dripping. Using canola oil, we were only able to observe periodic dripping. Oil was found to be unable to produce chaotic dripping. We theorize that the inability of oil to drip chaotically is a result of its lower surface tension when compared to water.
