An economic and sociological survey of small holding settlement under the Veterans' Land Act Lloyd, Robert Everton

Abstract

This essay is concerned with small holding land settlement and is based on an economic and sociological survey of small holding settlement in the Fraser Valley and Lower Mainland of British Columbia. At the request of the Director of the Veterans’ Land Act, the study was undertaken with the purpose of securing information on veteran rehabilitation through the medium of small holding land settlement under the supervision of the Small Holdings Division of the Veteran's' Land Act. The small holding settlements included in this study are representative of those to be found in the Fraser Valley and Lower Mainland of British Columbia. A total of 120 field records, representative of five types of small farm enterprise, were obtained in eight municipalities. In the study, analysis of data pertaining to the economic aspects of rural small holding settlement is designed to show the type of organization, distribution of capital and kind of farm enterprise which best tends to supplement the veteran small holder's outside income. In addition, an effort was made to learn something of the social well-being of veteran small holders and their dependent families.
