Supersuppression in Neurospora crassa Newcombe, Kenneth Donald
Abstract
A population of 76 adenine-3B (ad-3B) heteroalleles (each produced by transition of a single base pair) has been tested for suppressibility bj 8 supersuppressors. . Suppression has been observed in ncnpolar and noncompleinenting strains with AT or GC at the mutant site, and in strains with a polarized pattern of complementation and AT at the mutant site. The results support earlier work indicating the existence of nonsense mutations and nonsense suppressors in Neurospora strains. The results also suggest the existence of a novel species of tRNA which can recognise either a nonsense or a missense codon.
