An optical study of the critical behaviour of CHF₃ Stein, Michael Paul

Abstract

The coexistence curve for CHF₃, measured in the reduced temperature range 4 x 10⁻⁶ < -t < 3.5 x 10⁻² by focal plane interference methods, has been analyzed in terms of the correction to scaling prediction (ρ[sub ℓ] – ρ[sub v])/ ρ[sub c] = B₀|t|[sup β] (1+ B₁|t|[sup Δ]+ B₂|t|[sup 2Δ]) to yield values of the critical exponent β, the critical temperature T[sub c] and the amplitudes B₀, B₁ and B₂. An image plane interference technique has been employed in the reduced temperature range 1.7 x 10⁻⁵ < t < 2 x 10⁻⁴ to obtain pressure-density isotherms for CHF₃. These isotherms are used to determine a value of the critical exponent γ defined by the compressibility power law expression Κ[sub T] =r₀|t|[sup –γ].
