A comparison of two alcohol treatment programmes Spaulding, Elizabeth Margaret

Abstract

This study compared two different alcohol treatment programmes aimed at controlling drinking. Problem drinkers were assigned to either the SKILLS self-management programme or to an alcohol education programme. Clients either met with their individual SKILLS counsellor or their education group for ten weeks. Subjects significantly reduced their alcohol consumption over the course of the programme and maintained the behaviour changes over a period. No significant differences were found between groups on the drinking measures at post assessment, although subjects in the alcohol education group scored higher on a marital satisfaction measure. Implications and explanations for the results were discussed.
