On ambiguous sentences with the particle To Fujimura, Taiji

Abstract

This thesis attempts to describe Japanese sentences in which to functions as the symmetric, concomitative, or coordinate particle. Earlier studies by Gkutsu (1967), Kuno (1967-68) and Inoue (1976b) are closely examined. It is assumed that sentences with conjoined HP's like Taroo to Hanako ga kekkon-si-ta are all transformationally derived. In connection with this assumption, the rules of Conjunction Reduction, Issyo ni Insertion, NP Scrambling in NP, Conjunct Movement and Reciprocal Transformation are proposed. It is also argued that the rules should apply in the order given above.
