Bibliografia selecta sobre Gabriel Garcia Marquez Chaparro, Luis Faustino

Abstract

The purpose of this thesis is to give a selective list of critical studies on the works of Colombian novelist Gabriel Garcia Marquez, to evaluate these studies, and to give an overall view of the critical approaches applied to his works. The Introduction evaluates the bibliographies of Pedro Lastra, Mario Vargas Llosa, Olga Carreras Gonzalez, and Rosanne B. de Mendoza on Garcia Marquez, and shows that the bibliographies are outdated, have some serious bibliographic errors and omissions, and/or fail to give a manageable account of the studies listed. Part II of the thesis delves into the different critical approaches to Garcia Marquez's work (stylistic, comparative, thematic), and into the monographs concerned with the study of characters and sources. A great number of studies are dedicated to studying the importance of time and myth in Garcia Marquez's work; but in spite of the numerous critical monographs dedicated to his novels and short stories, there is still much ground to be covered, even in the well-cultivated field of thematic studies. The Selected Bibliography contains one hundred and sixty eight entries and covers all major critical studies published up to and including 1976.
