Abstract
This study was an exploration into aspects residential group care programs for youth that facilitate and hinder development of self-esteem, relationship building, internal locus of control, and academic achievement. The purpose of the study was to generate practical information that could be used by practitioners working in the field of child and youth care in the context of residential group care programs. The research method involved interviewing 12 adults that had lived in residential care programs when they were teenagers. The Critical Incident Technique was used to elicit incidents from the 12 participants.
