The canzoni da sonar con ogni sorte d’istromenti, 1625 of Giovanni Picchi Wilkes, Nathan Garrison

Abstract

Giovanni Picchi (c. 1572 - 1643) was a Venetian composer and keyboard player active in the early seventeenth century. His Canzoni da sonar con ogni sorte d'istromente (1625) is a diverse set of nineteen ensemble canzonas in two to eight parts. Unusually for this period, Picchi specifies precise instrumentation in much of the collection, including violin, recorder, cornetto, trombone, bassoon, and organ; trombone, violin, and organ being the predominant instruments. The compositional style generally follows the tradition of Giovanni Gabrieli. This document places the Canzoni da sonar in an historical context, and provides insight into the canzonas themselves. A transcription of the entire collection is included.
