Finite element analysis on vibration behavior and fatigue cracking prediction of a Francis type hydraulic turbine Chan, Sze Bun
GMS turbine cracking problem was investigated using finite element analysis. Analysis results confirmed that fatigue cracking could occur due to resonance induced by pressure variation as turbine blades pass wicket gates. Analyses also showed that fatigue life could be extremely low due to extremely high cycles experienced by the turbine. Installation of blade stiffeners and thickness modifications could change the natural frequency of the turbine. However, the modifications could cause efficiency reduction, cavitation behavior change or structural weakness. Therefore no feasible modifications were suggested.
