A convective boundary layer model with time-adaptive grids Rucker, Magdalena

Abstract

This thesis presents the first implementation of time-adaptive non-uniform grid distributions in higher order turbulence closure modelling of the convective boundary layer. The aim was to introduce a vertical grid that resolves the surface and entrainment layers, but uses coarser resolution elsewhere. Two types of grid generating methods were examined with the Level 2.5 turbulence closure model (Mellor and Yamada, 1982; Yamada, 1983). The solution profiles of mean and turbulent quantities were compared to model results obtained with stationary grid distributions of the same mesh size as well as a reference solution obtained with a grid resolution of 10m.
