Single bit optimal detection of a BPSK signal in the presence of co-channel interferers Kwan, Raymond Yuk Chor
Abstract
The matched filter receiver is optimal for detection of a signal in additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN), but no longer optimal in the presence of interference. In this thesis, optimal BPSK receivers in the presence of one and two interferers with AWGN are derived. The first type of receiver (type I) assumes knowledge of the amplitudes, frequencies and carrier phases of both the desired and interferer signals, as well as the power spectral density of the noise. The second type of receiver (type II) is similar to the type I receiver, except that knowledge of the interferer signal's carrier phase is not available. For both types of receivers, the bit error rate (BER) performance as well as sensitivity analyses are presented in environments in which the desired and interferer signals are bit aligned and randomly aligned. It is found that the BER performances of the optimal receivers are significantly better than those of the matched filter receiver at low SIR. When the carrier frequency separation between the desired and interferer signals increases from zero, significant error performance improvement can be observed for the optimal receiver at low SIR compared to the performance when the carrier frequencies are the same.

The matched filter receiver is optimal for detection of a signal in additive white Gaussian
noise (AWGN), but no longer optimal in the presence of interference. In this thesis, optimal
BPSK receivers in the presence of one and two interferers with AWGN are derived.
The first type of receiver (type I) assumes knowledge of the amplitudes, frequencies and
carrier phases of both the desired and interferer signals, as well as the power spectral
density of the noise. The second type of receiver (type II) is similar to the type I receiver,
except that knowledge of the interferer signal's carrier phase is not available. For both
types of receivers, the bit error rate (BER) performance as well as sensitivity analyses
are presented in environments in which the desired and interferer signals are bit aligned
and randomly aligned. It is found that the BER performances of the optimal receivers
are significantly better than those of the matched filter receiver at low SIR. When the
carrier frequency separation between the desired and interferer signals increases from
zero, significant error performance improvement can be observed for the optimal receiver
at low SIR compared to the performance when the carrier frequencies are the same.
