Solvent extraction of British Columbia coal Powley, Maurice Bruce

Abstract

A sample of coal from a newly discovered field in the Peace River area of British Columbia has been extracted with a variety of solvents. The effect of composition on percent extraction has been studied for several mixtures of organic solvents. Extraction techniques have been investigated along with methods of determining the extent of extraction. The influence of pressure and temperature on percent extraction has been studied with the solvents, benzene and toluene, with the aid of a pressure soxhlet extractor. The coal was found to be very resistant to solvent extraction, with a maximum extraction of 0.5 percent obtained, using toluene with the pressure soxhlet extractor.
