Some dyes and intermediates from vanillin Cochrane, James Alton
Abstract
An attempt was made to synthesize dyes of the triphenylmethane series, with vanillin as a starting material. Using conventional methods of dye preparation, several brilliant dyes were obtained, but only one of these was finally crystallized. A new method of triphenylmethane preparation was partially investigated. This consisted of condensing 3 methoxy 4 benzoyl benzal chloride, a new derivative of vanillin, with aryl compounds containing auxochrome groups.
