A descriptive study of the experiences and meanings of an adult male survivor of child sexual abuse Cameron, Malcolm Paul

Abstract

This study explores the experiences and meanings of an adult male survivor of child sexual abuse. A case study approach in the form of an in-depth interview was utilized in an effort to examine one survivor's experiences and subjective interpretations in light of his childhood sexual victimization. It was found that the survivor elevated his experience of child sexual abuse to the degree that it negatively permeated all aspects of his life. Child sexual abuse was cited by the survivor as the antecedent to the development of specific problematic life themes. These themes included sexual identity confusion, homophobia, ambivalence toward men, estrangement from his father, unsatisfying relationships with women, fear of intimacy, and movement toward recovery. This study therefore examines the presenting data and includes a critical analysis.
