The effect of trauma work on the spirituality of the counsellor : a critical incident analysis Moosmann, Sandra
Abstract
The present study employed a modified critical incident technique to examine the effects that working with victims of violence may have on the spirituality of trauma counsellors. Individual interviews were conducted with 7 trauma counsellors. These counsellor coresearchers were asked to recount incidents that occurred in their workplace that had a significant impact on their sense of spirituality and then to describe that impact. The interviews were analyzed to extract the effects on spirituality. The effects were divided into 2 broad groupings which yielded a total of 11 categories, which were then subjected to 4 validation checks. Results indicated that the relationship between trauma work and counsellors' spirituality appears to be complex and reciprocal.
