Between east and west : the voice of Miloje Milojević Markovic, Nikola
Abstract
The piano compositions of Serbian composer Miloje Milojević (1884-1946) are rarely featured in performance or included in the repertoire of classical pianists. This thesis is the first extended study of the composer’s piano music. It discusses Milojević’s approach to writing for the instrument and places a select group of pieces within key moments in his career as both a pianist and composer. Milojević’s works are part of the emergence of Serbian piano music during the first half of the 20th century. As creative and vital as that music is, it remains underrepresented in performances and recordings be pianists. While there has been some international acknowledgment in recent decades, Serbian piano music still remains an undiscovered treasure for pianists and their audiences outside of Serbia. This thesis focuses on three solo piano works: Quatre Morceaux (Four Pieces for Piano), Op.23, Ritmicke Grimase (Rhythmical Grimaces) Op.47 and Povardarska Svita (Suite of Vardar Region), Op.71. The pieces reveal various stylistic paths which Milojević explored throughout his career. Analyses of the selected movements of works concentrate on aspects of form, tonality, rhythm, and melodic writing. The thesis also offers interpretative insights and performance suggestions. Through such a broad perspective, this study introduces pianists and listeners to the imaginative and captivating music of Miloje Milojević.
