Compositions : making space for nature and social activism Wright, Daniel Emerson Stephen
Abstract
This thesis for the Master of Music degree for Composition is comprised of approximately 45 minutes of music that has been composed from 2019 – 2021. The works have all grown from a desire to explore how various extra-musical elements such as theatre, nature, class, and social activism interact with music; specifically the post-tonal style that this author writes with. There has been an intentional focus on the engagement of the players that are performing as well as with the audience. Many of the works feature speaking and moments of acting as a way of introducing broader concepts about our current social climate. In addition, ongoing events like the COVID-19 pandemic, global warming, and the disparities / competitiveness of Canadian housing markets have served as stimulation for this body of work. Compositions: Making Space for Nature and Social Activism is the culmination of such ideas, and consists of the following works: greenhouse (A Rumination on Carbon Emissions), Construct, Dilettante, Two Roads Diverge? (in geographically separate locations), and Slipping Through the Cracks
