21st century cognitive apprenticeship : a multitouch interactive electronic textbook to teach dentistry students from classroom to clinic Verhaeghe, Tyler Victor
Abstract
Problem: Historically, the format of electronic textbooks in VitalSource Bookshelf used in dental education has been costly, not well received by student reactions to its learning potential and has failed to objectively demonstrate improved assessment outcomes. Material and Methods: A multitouch interactive electronic textbook (iBook) on complete dentures was created by a dental educator using iBooks Author software and an existing library of learning objects, using cognitive theories for its design and the cognitive apprenticeship model (CAM) as an educational framework for its integration across the curriculum. The iBook was accessed by a cohort of undergraduate dental students using provided iPads as they progressed from classroom to clinic. A questionnaire was administered and pre-clinical assessment outcomes were measured. Using student feedback, a second edition of the iBook was provided to the students for their final clinical year and then their ability to independently fabricate an upper complete denture was evaluated. Conclusions: The first edition of the iBook generated a very positive reaction from the dental students. It also resulted in a significant increase in the final written examination scores of a preclinical course on complete dentures compared to students who only had a printed textbook. Student feedback recommended increased quantities of 3D animations, interactive images and videos for the second edition of the iBook. Although it did not demonstrate an improvement in the students’ ability to independently fabricate an upper complete denture, this may have been the result of a change in the clinical instructors supervising their first complete denture experience and suggests that further examination of the coaching component of the CAM be investigated. It also demonstrated that the iBook has the potential to be a viable replacement for VitalSource Bookshelf but development of more dentistry iBooks and further research is required.
