Faith formation for the second-generation Korean-Canadian congregation in a secular age Song, Angie Mee Young

Abstract

This study investigated contemporary Christian faith formation practices in second generation Korean-Canadian congregations to evaluate the theological perspectives and effectiveness of practice in a secular Canadian context. Using ethnographic research methodology, this research aims to increase understanding about faith formational practices in the Korean-Canadian immigrant church and contribute to Canadian-based scholarship. In depth interviews were conducted with eighteen pastors and lay congregant members. The collected data was analyzed through thematic content analysis and nine patterns emerged under four main areas: relational formation, experience-specific formation, culturally-informed formation and missional formation. The tentative normative outcomes highlight an expanding definition of woori, a growing resilience amidst discomfort, and a forming faith through missional vocation.
