Plotting the Paths of Platter-like Projectiles Phillips, Nicholas; Needham, Cole
Abstract
This study explores an alternative to traditional wind tunnel aerodynamic analysis. We propose a faster, cheaper method of determining aerodynamic coefficients, as shown through testing on two disc golf discs. The system uses both a two camera setup to film the discs’ flights in 3 dimensions and a coefficient fitting program coded in Python. We obtained similar coefficients to other studies that used a wind tunnel, though the uncertainties on our coefficients were very large. This shows that the proposed system is accurate, though imprecise. As such, our method could be useful for preliminary testing of a design, in cases of insufficient funding, or when only a rough idea of the aerodynamics is desired.
