The Aging Person and the Modern Hearth : A New Model for Senior Housing and Community Food Space in Vancouver’s Westside. Jeffrey, Mitchell

Abstract

A growing number of Vancouver’s seniors are experiencing social isolation and loneliness. This graduate project responds by proposing an elderly housing model that fosters intergenerational exchange and interactivity through food-focused community spaces in the Vancouver neighbourhood of Kerrisdale. It explores how spaces for growing, preparing, sharing, and learning about food can serve as placemaking tools—creating connections between elderly residents and the broader community while promoting engagement and participation.
