Designing to Empower: An Action Kit for Engaged Design Literacy in Women's Shelters McLean, Isobel
Abstract
Recent years have seen a significant increase in infrastructure grants for anti-violence organizations, particularly aimed at upgrading their shelter buildings. This funding presents unprecedented opportunities for these organizations to rethink how architecture and design can not only support their services but also align with their commitment to providing a physically, culturally, and emotionally safe place for women and children escaping abuse. This project was designed to address the fact that new funding, while providing opportunities for enhancing how space could support healing, was not accompanied by changes in policies, procedures or processes that would allow organizations and architects the time and other resources to do this work together. It asks, how might we empower management, staff, and guests of anti-violence organizations to ground decisions about future shelter spaces in their lived experience?
