The Wholesome Multiplex : A guide to designing for well-being within multiplexes in Vancouver’s single-family residential zones Li, Rebecca

Abstract

Urban living, long seen as a symbol of progress and opportunity, has brought about a host of benefits alongside challenges. While cities offer advanced technologies and wealth, they also present issues such as social disconnection and physical inactivity. This paradox has led to rising levels of mental and physical health problems despite apparent societal advancement. This project aims to tackle this problem, focusing on Vancouver's low-rise residential neighbourhoods as a starting point. The Wholesome Multiplex is a guidebook resource for community leaders seeking to challenge traditional residential frameworks and reimagine multiplexes as integral components of transforming Vancouver's fabric. Through the lens of social connection, physical activity, and urban agriculture, it strives to change the narrative of urban living toward creating collaborative, healthy homes and establish multiplexes as catalysts for fostering wholesome, self-sufficient ecosystems throughout the city.
