North Shuswap Sanctuary : Envisioning a fire-resilient, risky-play based schoolyard for children in the urban-wildfire interface Richards, Jennifer
Abstract
Throughout British Columbia, the edges of fire-prone areas often intersect with inhabited spaces along the wildfire-urban interface, leading to disastrous consequences. The fate of these landscapes are tied to those who share space with them. Situated along the burn scars of the 2023 Bush Creek East Wildfire, this project seeks to create a vision for the existing playground at North Shuswap Elementary. Residents of this community were deeply affected by the Bush Creek East Wildfire in 2023, with many having faced devastating losses. Through the integration of fire resistant design principles and nature-based play elements, it aims to promote resilience to future environmental challenges. By providing access to nature and risky play, this project provides an enriched setting for children during their cognitive years, providing a safe yet adventurous space for exploration and growth. In doing so, it reimagines possibilities for designing child-friendly spaces amidst a backdrop of environmental transition.
