Shifting Shorelines : Exploring the Ecotones of Prince Rupert Fleck, Ashley
Abstract
This project explores the city of Prince Rupert in Northern BC, and the impact that the history of development and industry has had on its current conditions, particularly along the shoreline, the interface between land and water. Through researching archival information, the following conclusions can be made: 1. The coastal waters have been utilized for their vast resources. 2. Industrialization and demand for waterfront land has caused the shoreline to be reshaped and filled, and the creeks flowing into the harbour to be altered and disrupted. Within this project, the shoreline of Prince Rupert is viewed as an ecotone, representing the tensions embedded throughout the city’s development, and ultimately providing opportunity for the community to steward their connection with water and ecology at the interface of changing industry.
